Jennifer Taylor Volunteer of the Year

One of the best things about our programming is the new skills that participants learn along the way. From developing as paddlers to learning to belay or fish, our participants can carry the skills they learn into their personal lives. For 2024 Volunteer of the Year, Jennifer Taylor's passion for the water led her to become a fantastic volunteer and partner for Beyond Boundaries.

Jennifer began her adventure career as a participant, joining us on several climbs with Sportable. After talking with the team during numerous climbs, she opened up about how much she loved the water, and we encouraged her to join us on some fishing, paddling, and boating trips. One thing led to another (as it often does), and Jennifer began investing extreme time as a volunteer.

“I was rock climbing with Sportable, Katie, Alek, and Shep. I was talking to Katie and Alek, and I said I love the water so much, and they said, ‘You can always volunteer.’ I started with fishing, and that's how it’s started, and I never stopped volunteering,” says Jennifer

Jennifer has stepped up a ton and provides a unique perspective as a volunteer and participant. Her willingness to spend time with newer participants or people who may be worried about the trip has helped others come out of their shells and learn about our challenge-by-choice model.

“I would tell them that they should believe in themselves; you’re not going to be asked to do anything you don’t want to do; we’ll be right there beside you and just enjoy it. Do what you feel comfortable with,” she says.

Jennifer now volunteers on fishing, pontoon, and paddling trips. She’s especially excited about some of our upcoming camping opportunities as well.

For her, the joy of volunteering and participating with Beyond Boundaries comes from the camaraderie and encouragement.

“The most important thing for me is seeing the excitement on the participant's faces. They’re given a chance to do things that they never have before. It’s awesome to see their different reactions,” she explains.

Katie has experienced Jennifer’s enthusiasm firsthand on every trip she attends. “At climbing, she is always encouraging others, laughing with us, and a great person to be around. She always encourages others to volunteer with us, and I see her at most of Beyond Boundaries' tabling events. One of the coolest things about this job is all of the people I get to meet, and Jennifer Taylor is one of the best people I've ever met,”

While well deserved, being named Volunteer of the Year was a pleasant surprise for Jennifer.

“To be Volunteer of the Year was just wonderful; I don’t know what I can say; it makes me feel special that they want me to be a part of their group,” she states.

Thank you, Jennifer, for all that you do, and congratulations again on being named Volunteer of the Year!

“Jennifer embodies the spirit of Beyond Boundaries, seamlessly transitioning from participant to dedicated volunteer.  She shows up with a smile, helps others feel comfortable, and brings positive energy to every program. Her kindness and commitment make a real difference, and we are incredibly grateful to have Jennifer as part of the Beyond Boundaries team,” states Alek.
